Starting with VISION: Why it matters in business
I’ve been having loads of great sessions lately with OT's taking the leap into private practice or sole trading, and one of the first conversations we have is about vision. Before you register an ABN or choose your business name, it’s worth stopping to ask: Why am I doing this?
Starting a business can feel exciting and daunting all at once. There are systems to set up, marketing to learn, and admin to figure out—but underneath all of that, you need a reason to keep showing up when things get tough. That’s where your vision comes in.
Why did you decide to start your business?
Everyone has their own “why.” For some, it’s flexibility or wanting more control over their work. For others, it’s about doing things differently — or doing things better.
Maybe you’ve worked in environments that didn’t align with your values. Maybe you’ve seen gaps in services and want to fill them with a better solution. Or maybe you just want to create something that reflects your own philosophy and approach.
Whatever the reason, owning your decision and getting clear on it gives your business purpose and direction.
Why do you want to work for yourself?
Working for yourself comes with freedom—but it also comes with responsibility. You’re the admin team, the marketer, the biller, and the therapist. So why take that on?
Ask yourself:
What does flexibility mean to me?
What am I craving more (or less) of in my work?
What do I want my weeks to look and feel like?
When you’re clear on these things, it’s easier to make decisions that align with your values—and avoid building a business that burns you out.
Why do you do what you do?
It sounds simple, but this question really matters. Why allied health? Why therapy? Why this kind of work, with this kind of client?
There are lots of easier ways to earn a living—so what keeps you here?
Getting clear on this can guide your business identity, your messaging, and your services. It also keeps you grounded when the admin piles up and the week feels long.
Why do you push yourself?
There are days when it’s easy to lose momentum. Goals feel too big, and progress feels slow. That’s when your vision—your deeper reason for showing up—becomes your anchor. Maybe you’re doing this for your family. Maybe you want more balance. Maybe you want to be proud of the way you work.
Whatever it is, having a vision gives you direction, motivation, and something meaningful to come back to when you lose sight of the “why.”
Final thought: Start with vision
Before you get too deep into business plans, systems, or templates, start with your vision. Write it down. Choose 5 values that resonate with you and prioritise them in a list of importance. Articulate what these values mean to you. Then talk it out and make sure you revisit them often.
Because when your business is built on something that matters to you, it’s more likely to last—and more likely to feel like something you’re proud of.
What’s your vision? I’d love to hear it. 💭
